Far more than a simple steam bath, the Moroccan hammam is a true wellness ceremony that purifies body and soul. Here is how this ancestral ritual unfolds, step by step.
A tradition inherited from the imperial cities
For centuries, in the imperial cities of Fès, Marrakech and Meknès, the hammam has held a central place in the Moroccan art of living. A place of purification, relaxation and conviviality, it is passed down from generation to generation. At Sultana, in Mont Choisy, we revive this tradition with the most faithful respect for its gestures.
Warm steam: when the skin breathes
It all begins in the enveloping warmth of the hammam. Under the effect of the warm steam, the pores open, the skin breathes and tension gradually melts away. This first step deeply prepares the body: it softens the epidermis and creates a state of relaxation conducive to letting go.
Black soap, treasure of the olive
Next comes the application of black soap, a natural, smooth paste made from black olives and olive oil. Rich in vitamin E, it nourishes the epidermis and softens dead skin. It is left to work for a few minutes, allowing the skin to absorb its benefits.
The kessa glove scrub
This is the heart of the ritual. Using the kessa glove, a full-body scrub removes dead cells and accumulated impurities. The skin, freed from this dull veil, instantly regains softness and radiance. Good to know: at Sultana, the kessa glove is not included in the treatment — you may bring your own or purchase one on site for 300 rupees.
The wrap and the final relaxation
The ritual often continues with a mineral clay wrap — ghassoul, aker fassi, oud or nila depending on the chosen treatment — which purifies and remineralises the skin. It ends gently: hydration, massage or simply a mint tea to prolong this sensory journey. Depending on the package, a session lasts from 30 minutes to 2 hours.
