Understanding the ritual

What is a Moroccan hammam?

The Moroccan hammam is far more than a simple steam bath: it is a ritual of body and mind purification passed down through generations in the imperial cities of Fès, Marrakech and Meknès. An heir to Roman baths and the Arab-Andalusian tradition, it holds a central place in Moroccan art of living.

Unlike a dry sauna, the hammam relies on warm, humid steam that gently opens the pores. The body is then coated with black soap — a natural paste made from black olives and olive oil — then vigorously exfoliated with the kessa glove, which removes dead skin and reveals new, smooth and radiant skin.

The ritual often continues with a rhassoul wrap, a mineral clay from the Middle Atlas renowned for its purifying and remineralising properties. At Sultana, every gesture faithfully respects this tradition, with authentic products imported from Morocco.

Our difference

A real Moroccan hammam, not a hotel sauna

In Mauritius, many establishments offer a "hammam" that is in fact merely a steam cabin. Sultana is different.

🧖‍♀️

Moroccan expertise

Our team is trained in traditional hammam techniques, passed down in the pure tradition of Morocco's imperial cities.

🫒

Authentic products

Black soap, kessa glove, Middle Atlas rhassoul, argan oil, rose water: our ingredients come directly from Morocco.

Step by step

How a hammam ritual unfolds

1

The steam phase

You settle into the humid warmth of the hammam. The steam envelops the body, relaxes the muscles and prepares the skin by deeply opening the pores.

2

The black soap

The body is coated with black soap, a smooth olive-based paste. It is left to work for a few minutes to soften dead skin and nourish the epidermis.

3

The kessa glove scrub

This is the heart of the ritual: a vigorous scrub with the kessa glove that removes dead cells. The skin is instantly softer, smoother, cleansed of its impurities.

4

The rhassoul wrap

A mineral clay applied all over the body, sometimes enriched with rose water, aker fassi or nila. It purifies, remineralises and leaves the skin velvety.

5

The relaxation moment

The ritual ends gently: argan oil hydration, a relaxing massage or simply a mint tea to prolong this sensory journey.

Our four beauty treasures

After the scrub, the skin receives the best of Moroccan nature. Each wrap has its own virtues.

Ghassoul

Volcanic clay from the Middle Atlas. It purifies, softens and remineralises the skin — the base of all our body wraps.

Aker Fassi - coquelicot et grenade séchés

Aker Fassi

A natural blend of dried poppy and pomegranate. It brightens the complexion, regenerates and softens the skin.

Oud - résine boisée précieuse

Oud

A precious woody resin with deep oriental notes. It relaxes, hydrates and leaves an intense, bewitching fragrance.

Nila - poudre bleue du Sahara

Nila

A blue powder from the Sahara, brightening and illuminating. Ideal for reviving dull skin or skin prone to dark spots.

The Moroccan hammam, women and men

Sultana welcomes both women and men in dedicated time slots, to preserve everyone's privacy and comfort. The Moroccan hammam is not reserved for women: it is a mixed ritual by tradition, and our rituals for men are increasingly popular in Mauritius.

Frequently asked questions

Everything about the hammam

What is the difference between a hammam and a sauna?

A sauna uses dry heat (70 to 100°C), while the Moroccan hammam relies on humid steam at a gentler temperature. This humidity deeply opens the pores and allows the black soap scrub, a step impossible in a dry sauna.

What should I bring for a hammam?

Nothing in particular: everything is provided on site (towels, products, robe). You simply need to bring a swimsuit. We recommend arriving a few minutes early to fully enjoy your ritual.

How long does a hammam ritual last?

It depends on the chosen package. Our signature rituals last from 1h45 to 2h45. A hammam with scrub alone lasts about 45 minutes. Allow more time if you add a massage or wrap.

Is the hammam suitable for pregnant women?

The intense heat of the hammam is generally not recommended during pregnancy. We do, however, offer a specially adapted mum-to-be massage. Feel free to contact us for personalised advice.
